Will Tata Advanced Systems Emerge as the Front Runner for AMCA as Defence Ministry Issues RFP for Fifth-Generation Fighter Project?

The Defence Ministry has issued the Request for Proposal (RFP) for India’s ambitious indigenous fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme to three shortlisted industry bidders, according to defence officials. The contenders include Larsen and Toubro in partnership with Bharat Electronics Limited, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), and the Bharat Forge BEML combine.

The issuance of the RFP marks a critical step in advancing India’s push for self-reliance in next-generation combat aviation capabilities. The AMCA project, seen as a cornerstone of India’s future air power strategy, aims to develop a stealth-enabled, multi-role fighter with advanced avionics and weapons systems.

Sources indicate that Tata Advanced Systems is currently viewed as a frontrunner in the bidding process, although no official confirmation has been made. Industry assessments suggest TASL’s experience in aerospace manufacturing and existing collaborations could provide a competitive edge.

The development comes amid a broader policy push to deepen private sector participation in defence production. The final selection will be closely watched as it is expected to shape India’s indigenous fighter ecosystem for decades.
